New Zealand's Threatened Bryophyte lists

The conservation status of New Zealand’s indigenous bryophytes (mosses, liverworts and hornworts) is important when prioritising conservation management efforts towards those taxa in greatest need of protection and management. An expert committee comprising: Jessica Beever, Alan Fyfe, David Glenny, John Braggins, Matt Renner, Patrick Brownsey and Rod Hitchmough met in 2006 to compile a list of threatened mosses and liverworts in the New Zealand Botanic Region. That list was compiled using the threat classification system developed by the New Zealand Department of Conservation ( Molloy, J. et al. 2002: Classifying species according to threat of extinction – a system for New Zealand. Wellington, Department of Conservation ). The result of that process is a list of mosses and liverworts considered to be Acutely or Chronically threatened, Data Deficient or At Risk.

Complete lists of these threatened mosses and liverworts can be downloaded using the links below. In addition, lists of threatened taxa are provided according to each threat category. To download a list click on the heading for the list you want. Check the information to ensure it is the list you want and then click on ‘Download list'.

Information gathered over the coming years about the distribution and abundance of these species will be used in future assessments of their conservation status (see ‘Record your observations' section).

Location:
New Zealand - Nationally
Description:

This is a complete list of all threatened and uncommon bryophyte species in New Zealand. It includes acutely threatened (Critical, Endangered and Vulnerable), chronically threatened (Serious and Gradual Decline) and At Risk species (Range Restricted and Sparse). The list also includes non-resident native (Vagrant and Coloniser) and Data Deficient species. For definitions of all these terms go to the Network glossary.

Extinct bryophyte list open / close
Definition:
Extinct larger image
Location:
New Zealand - Nationally
Description:

A species is listed as Extinct when there is no reasonable doubt, after repeated surveys in known or expected habitats at appropriate times (diurnal, seasonal and annual) and throughout the species's historic range, that the last naturally occurring individual has died. Only species that have become extinct since 1840 are included in this list.

Nationally Critical bryophyte list open / close
Definition:
Critical larger image
Location:
New Zealand - Nationally
Description:

These are species with a small population size (less than or equal to 250 mature individuals), or the number of sub-populations known (less than or equal to 2, with less than or equal to 200 mature individuals in the largest of these), or their area of occupancy (0.01 km2), or their predicted decline rate (greater than or equal to 80 % in the next 10 years).

Nationally Endangered bryophyte list open / close
Definition:
Endangered larger image
Location:
New Zealand - Nationally
Description:

These species are characterised by small population size (250 - 1000 mature individuals), less than or equal to 5 sub-populations known (with either less than or equal to 300 mature individuals in the largest population or the total area of occupancy is less than or equal to 0.1 km2), and a moderate to high recent predicted decline (greater than or equal to 30 % of the total population or habitat area over the last 100 years, or predicted to occur within the next 10 years); or those species typified by small to moderate population sizes (1000-5000 mature individuals), less than or equal to 15 sub-populations (with less than or equal to 200-500 mature individuals in the largest or the total area of occupancy is 0.1-1 km2), and a high recent or predicted decline (greater than or equal to 60 % of the total population or habitat area over the last 100 years, or this is predicted to occur within the next 10 years).

Nationally Vulnerable bryophyte list open / close
Definition:
Vulnerable larger image
Location:
New Zealand - Nationally
Description:

These species are characterised by small to moderate population size (1000 - 5000 mature individuals), less than or equal to 15 sub-populations (either with 300-500 mature individuals in the largest sub-population or occupying a total area of 0.1-1 km2), and with either an initially historic but continuing decline rate of 30-60 % in total population size or habitat area over the last 100 years, or a predicted decline of 30-60 % in the total population likely in the next 10 years.

Serious Decline bryophyte list open / close
Definition:
Serious Decline larger image
Location:
New Zealand - Nationally
Description:

Species qualify if they occur as moderate to large populations where there is a moderate to large predicted decline (with total population size greater than 5000 mature individuals, greater than 15 sub-populations and either greater than 500 mature individuals in the largest sub-population or the total area of occupancy is greater than 1 km2, with a predicted decline rate of greater than 30 % in total population over the next 10 years), or the species exist as small to moderate sized populations with a small to moderate predicted decline (with total population less than 5000 mature individuals, less than or equal to 500 mature individuals in the largest sub-population or total area of occupancy less than or equal to 1 km2, with a predicted decline rate of 5-30 % in the total population over the next 10 years).

Definition:
Gradual Decline larger image
Location:
New Zealand - Nationally
Description:

Species qualify if they occur as moderate to large populations with small to moderate predicted declines (total population size greater than 5000 mature individuals, greater than 15 sub-populations and either greater than 500 mature individuals in the largest sub-population or the total area of occupancy is greater than 1 km2, with a decline rate of 5-30 % in total population over the next 10 years, which is predicted to continue beyond 10 years).

Range Restricted bryophyte list open / close
Definition:
Range Restricted larger image
Location:
New Zealand - Nationally
Description:

Species whose distributions are naturally confined to specific substrates (e.g., ultramafic rock), habitats (e.g., coastal turf), or geographic areas (e.g., Chatham Islands). These species occupy an area less than 100km2 and are believed to be under no obvious or immediate threat. Their restricted range makes them naturally susceptible to extirpation.

Sparse bryophyte list open / close
Definition:
Sparse larger image
Location:
New Zealand - Nationally
Description:

Species that occur within typically small and widely scattered populations. This distribution appears natural, and is not considered a result of anthropogenic disturbance. Because these species usually occur in small numbers at any given site, they are naturally susceptible to extirpation within parts of their range

Vagrant bryophyte list open / close
Definition:
Vagrant larger image
Location:
New Zealand - Nationally
Description:

These are species whose occurrences in New Zealand, though natural, are sporadic and typically transitory. Most of these species fail to establish beyond their arrival point because they fail to reproduce or for specific ecological reasons. This list also includes vagrants that are only known to have occurred in the New Zealand Botanical Region from historic herbarium specimens but have the potential to re-establish in New Zealand.
