  1. Is killing cats a useful strategy for protecting NZ ecosystems?

I have read many articles recently about Gareth Morgan's proposal to rid NZ of wild cats and his offer to pay a $5 bounty for every free-ranging, homeless cat destroyed by an authorised facility. Is this a useful strategy for ensuring the protection of indigenous ecosystems? Is there any up-to-date research that I should read about the benefits (or otherwise) of doing this?
