Species in this group are of high priority because of the importance of our alpine flora as a significant component of the overall flora. Within the alpine flora there are many threatened species, with some of the most threatened being our forget-me-nots (Myosotis spp.) with 29 threatened species, followed by 23 gentians (Gentianella spp.) 20 native daphne (Pimelea spp.), 18 alpine daisies (Celmisia spp.) and 15 speargrasses (Aciphylla spp.). Relatively little is known about the seed biology and behaviour of New Zealand alpine species and this project is an opportunity to discover more about this group of plants.
