Current conservation status
The conservation status of all known New Zealand vascular plant taxa at the rank of species and below were reassessed in 2022-2023 using the New Zealand Threat Classification System (NZTCS) – more information about this can be found on the NZTCS website. This report includes replaces all previous NZTCS lists for vascular plants. Previous assessments can be found here.
Please note, threat classifications are often suggested by authors when publications fall between NZTCS assessment periods – these interim threat classification statuses has not been assessed by the NZTCS panel.

Taxonomic notes
As currently circumscribed Muehlenbeckia complexa and M. australis remain highly variable species within which there may be cause to recognise additional taxa. Some of these have names. Muehlenbeckia complexa var. grandifolia is one of these, being regarded, increasingly, by New Zealand botanists as worthy of reinstatement. At the very least it deserves critical study, along with the other variants within M. complexa s.l., which include a distinct, large, and glossy-leaved, northern offshore island race, which is linked to var. grandifolia by its uniformly hairy stems.
