Detailed description
Stock and branch-bases woody; branches densely compacted, forming greenish cushions or mats up to 1 m diameter and 0.2 m tall. Leaves densely imbricate, 3-4 × 0.5-1 mm., linear-oblong, widened and truncate at apex, 1-nerved, dorsal surface with brush of long hairs near base, glabrous above; ventral surface glabrous below, with brush of straight hairs at tip, exceeding and concealing lamina. Capitula 3-5 mm diameter. Inner involucral bracts linear, c.2.5 mm long, scarious on margins, obtuse to acute, tips erect, often white. Achenes <1 mm. long, clad in stiff hairs; pappus-hairs c.2.5 mm long, stiff.

Etymology
raoulia: Named after Étienne Fiacre Louis Raoul (23 July 1815–30 March 1852) who was a French naval surgeon and naturalist. He published a book Choix de plantes de la Nouvelle-Zélande (“Selected plants of New Zealand”) in 1846. The genus was named after him by Joseph Hooker.
