Upright evergreen shrub to 5 m tall. “Leaves broad elliptic, 3–7 cm long and 1.2–3 cm broad, with a finely serrated margins. The flowers are 5–7 cm diameter, with 5–8 white to dark pink petals.” (Wikipedia) Flowers autumn to late winter.

camellia: Named by Linnaeus after Georg Josef Kamel (21 April 1661 – 2 May 1706), 17th century Moravian Jesuit missionary and botanist who worked in the Phiippines.
