Etymology
eryngium: From the Greek eryngion, a type of spiny-leaved thistle resembling sea holly
amethystinum: From the Greek amethusto ‘amethyst’. The name of this violet semi-precious gemstone literally means ‘not drunk’ as it was believed to prevent drunkenness. In botany, the colour amethyst is a lighter version of violet.
