Similar taxa
Distingished from H. autumnale by its inconspicuous ligules and the lack of simple stems. H. autumnale has only been collected twice, established as a persistent garden escape in pasture near Greytown, Wairarapa, and as a casual in Christchurch Rosilla or Sneezewort has been previously recorded in New Zealand as H. qaudridentatum.

Etymology
helenium: Named after the genus Helenium which it resembles. Helenium is possibly named after Helen of Troy because of of a myth describing these flowers springing up from her tears.
