Stems 0.3 to 1.2 m tall, erect but branching more than those of other foxtails. Panicle dense, 5 to 10 cm long, with one bristle at the base of each spikelet, rarely 2 or 3. Bristles barbed (Wax, Fawcett and Isely 1981), causing seed heads to stick to each other, like ‘Velcro’.
