Detailed description
Stems 0.3–1.2 m tall, erect but branching more than those of other foxtails. Panicle dense, 5–10 cm long, with one bristle at the base of each spikelet, rarely 2 or 3. Bristles barbed (Wax, Fawcett and Isely 1981), causing seed heads to stick to each other, like ‘Velcro’.

Seeds. Seed, greenish, similar to S. viridis in size and shape (Wax, Fawcett and Isely 1981). Seeds can be carried great distances by humans and animals (ibid.).
