2026 Favourite Native Plant opens
This year, voters will be able to choose from a selection of threatened wetland-specialist plants. The selection includes some of New Zealand’s most threatened and unique native species from one of our most endangered ecosystems. Wetlands are home to a wide variety of specialised plants, many of which are found nowhere else in the world. Unfortunately, the extensive loss and modification of wetlands over the past two centuries has left many of these species vulnerable. Some of these are now restricted to only a handful of sites as their habitat continues to decline.
The 2026 list of candidates includes a diverse range of wetland plants, from tiny ephemeral herbs and obscure rushes and sedges to vibrant orchids and tall trees. The vote provides a great opportunity to bring attention to New Zealand’s unique wetland flora as well as raising awareness for these threatened species and the importance of protecting and restoring our wetland habitats. Voting will open 13 October during the NZPCN 2026 conference in Wellington in October and will run for one month. Look for the Favourite Plant button our website homepage.
