Hamilton Junior Naturalist Club (Hjnc) Reunion
The Hamilton Junior Naturalist Club (HJNC) was initiated in 1962 by the then Hamilton Based Science Advisor to the Department of Education Pat Devlin. Devlin recognised that many school children had interests in Natural History that was not being encouraged through the then school curriculum. He wanted to provide the opportunity for these children to learn at their own pace elsewhere. The club, with local encouragement soon had its own facilities abutting Te Kauri Scenic Reserve, near Oparau, Kawhia. Using the lodge as a base many children were taught the basics of New Zealand Natural History and Bush Craft. Many of these children went on to have (or continue to have) significant careers in the former New Zealand Wildlife Service, Department of Lands and Survey, Forestry Service, Museums, and Universities throughout the world. Many past members are still employed as research scientists in the New Zealand Department of Conservation. The club is now 44 years old and still going strong. If you are a past member and want to catch up, have an interest in the reunion, or want to join your children or as an adult member visit their website at http://www.junats.org.nz/index.phpPosted: 02/06/2006
