Endemic. North Island, uncommon, on Mt Hikurangi, Ruahine and Tararua Ranges. South Island uncommon, along the main divide and to the west to Fiordland.
Habitat
Subalpine to alpine (760 - 1980 m) grassland, grey scrub and forest margins, where it often found on boulder falls or slip scars. Usually in shady, damp sites.

Propagation technique
Easy from fresh seed and division of whole plants. Dislikes humdity but will grow well in most soils though it prefers shade. A very attractive grass which should be more widely grown. Often hybridises with K. lepida and K. tenella.

Etymology
koeleria: Named after George Ludwig Koeler (1765-1807), 18th century German botanist. Author of a work on the grasses of Germany and France, Descriptio graminum in Gallia et Germania (1802).
