Craspedia huriawa was assessed as ‘Threatened-Nationally Critical’ by de Lange et al. (2018) under the tag name Craspedia (g) (CHR 469764; Pikikirunga), with the qualifier ‘OL’ [One Location]. This assessment is not challenged by the naming authors of C. huriawa (Breitwieser et al. 2022).

Etymology
craspedia: Craspedia is named for the Greek ‘Kraspedon’, meaning an edge, hem or border, because of the woolly fringes of the leaves of the type species.
huriawa: A te reo Māori name referring to ‘Huriawa’ the female taniwha (supernatural being in Māori tradition) of Te Waikoropupū Springs and the interconnecting underground waterways of Tākaka Hill and Golden Bay / Mohua.
